Bolsonaro convicted for coup attempt

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) has become the third president in Brazil’s post-dictatorship period to be sentenced to prison, and the first to be convicted for plotting a coup d’état to stay in power after losing an election [WR-25-36]. The landmark trial, which concluded on 11 September with the conviction of Bolsonaro and seven other coup plotters, marks the first time in Brazilian history that any coup attempt has been punished in the courts. However, the ruling is unlikely to be the end of the saga, as the far-right populist ‘Bolsonarismo’ movement remains a major force in Brazilian politics even if its figurehead ends up behind bars, as his allies and supporters could continue making noise, claiming that he is a martyr being persecuted by authorities such as the supreme court (STF).
