MEXICO: Gov’t hails poverty reduction but work remains

On 13 August Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) published new data showing that 8.3m Mexicans were lifted out of poverty from 2022 to 2024. This means that the number of people living in poverty fell from 46.8m to 38.5m, according to Inegi, which measures poverty as having insufficient income to afford a basic basket of goods and basic services, as well as lacking access to social rights such as education, healthcare, or housing.
