Government moves to expropriate former torture site

Chile’s leftist government led by President Gabriel Boric has officially launched the process to expropriate land that was once a site used for detention and torture during the military dictatorship led by General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). This comes as part of efforts by the Boric administration to address the legacy of the dictatorship and create more memorials to remember the regime’s victims. With Boric’s term due to end in March 2026, the current administration is under pressure to deliver on this declared objective.
