MEXICO: Musicians’ murders threaten diplomatic relations

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has denied that the recent murder of two Colombian musicians will have a negative impact on relations with Colombia, although stating she would not “enter into debate” with President Gustavo Petro regarding the reason for the killings. Petro has publicly blamed the murders on US drug policy, which he said had led to the growth of international drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) while failing to protect young people in Latin America. Sheinbaum will be wary about being drawn into this line of argument given the delicate balancing act she is performing in maintaining good relations with US President Donald Trump and demonstrating efforts to crack down on drug cartels while also standing up for Mexican sovereignty.
