Protesters took to the streets of Asunción on 28 September to denounce government corruption, nepotism, impunity, and a lack of funding for health and education services. The protests were organised via social media by young people belonging to Generation Z, following other youth-led protests in Peru’s capital Lima, as well as other countries across the world, in recent weeks. The heavy-handed police response to the protests has drawn widespread criticism from civil society organisations, Paraguay’s autonomous human rights body, and the legislature. This backlash piles further pressure on Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña, who was the object of much of the protesters’ criticism.
