Attack on Uruguay’s top prosecutor causes consternation

Two gunmen broke into the house of Uruguay’s acting attorney general, Mónica Ferrero, in Montevideo on 29 September, fired gunshots, and detonated a grenade. Neither Ferrero nor her family were hurt but the brazen nature of the incident, which the police suspect was ordered by drug trafficking groups, lays bare the scale of the threat posed by organised crime in Uruguay and explains why violence and insecurity tops the list of public concerns in opinion surveys.
