*Public transport workers have gone on strike today (6 October) in Peru’s capital Lima and the neighbouring port city of Callao, in protest at the murder of transport workers by extortion gangs.
Martín Ojeda, director of the regional transport lobby Cámara Internacional de la Industria de Transporte (CIT), told Peruvian television news channel
RPP yesterday that the 24-hour strike is in response to the murder of a bus driver on 4 October. Ojeda said that transport companies have agreed to a
“paralysation” of public transport in Lima and Callao in solidarity with the murdered worker and his family. According to
RPP, 11 transport companies represented by the CIT will take part in the strike. Public transport workers launched a wave of protest action around the country
in October 2024 to demand action against extortion, and the resumption of strikes a year later reflects the persistence of the problem which has been declared a top priority by President
Dina Boluarte’s government.
