*Honduras’ education ministry (Seduc) has announced the suspension of in-person classes for 24 hours in four departments where a state of emergency was declared for 45 days on 12 October due to rains. The departments affected by the state of emergency, which enables resources to be re-allocated to address the impact of the rains and accelerates other procedures, are Francisco Morazán (where the capital Tegucigalpa is located), La Paz, Lempira, and Intibucá. The government led by President
Xiomara Castro also announced yesterday that 70% of public officials based in the capital would work remotely, with the exception of those who work for institutions tasked with addressing the emergency situation. According to a 13 October update by the country’s permanent contingency commission (Copeco), a government entity created to coordinate public and private disaster relief efforts, heavy rains registered between 29 September and 13 October have left 11 people dead, and over 10,000 people impacted, with over 2,000 families particularly affected, across the country. According to the report, 1,749 homes have been damaged and 68 completely destroyed, mainly in the departments of Francisco Morazán, La Paz, Lempira, Valle, Choluteca, Intibucá, and Cortés.
