Lula inaugurates new BYD factory. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva attended the launch event on 9 October for a new factory in Bahia state owned by Chinese carmaker BYD. Located in Camaçari municipality, near the state capital of Salvador, the factory will focus on manufacturing hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) and is BYD’s largest EV production facility outside of Asia. The carmaker has invested R$5.5bn (US$1bn) in the factory and its initial production capacity is estimated at 150,000 vehicles per year, with expansion plans to boost production to 300,000 units per year at a later stage.
