The US government has reportedly revoked the visas of over 50 Mexican officials as part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on drug cartels and those who collude with them. The visa revocations, which two Mexican officials confirmed to newswire Reuters, would represent yet another escalation in Trump’s offensive against cartels, which is increasingly targeting the politicians and financial institutions that facilitate cartel activity, as well as cartel members themselves. The move would likely raise tensions between President Claudia Sheinbaum and Trump. While Sheinbaum has shown willing to comply with Trump in combatting cartels, the targeting of officials, many of whom reportedly hail from the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), could well be viewed as an overstep by his administration.
