GUATEMALA: Top security officials ejected over prison break

Guatemala’s interior minister, Francisco Jiménez, and the head of the prison service, Ludin Godínez, have been forced to step down after inmates escaped from the high security Fraijanes II prison on the outskirts of Guatemala City. The jail break is threatening a major crisis for the left-of-centre government led by President Bernardo Arévalo, which took office in January 2024 amid promises to regain control of the country’s corrupt and overcrowded prison system.
