Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) was convicted of participating in a coup plot to help him stay in power after losing the 2022 election. The trial took place amid an intensely polarised political climate, with Bolsonaro’s supporters claiming he was being unjustly persecuted, while others viewed the conviction as the proper functioning of democratic checks and balances.
