ECUADOR: Big win for Noboa as protesters stand down

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa has succeeded where his two immediate predecessors did not. He has successfully faced down weeks of disruptive protests by the umbrella indigenous organisation Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie). The protests, which were triggered by Noboa’s cancellation of diesel subsidies, were called off on 22 October. Buoyed by this victory, Noboa will be aiming to carry the political momentum into the 16 November referendum which could pave the way for an overhaul of the 2008 constitution.
