“He was a statesman and a great son of the nation, who dedicated his life to serving Suriname.” This eulogy to mark the passing of Ronald Venetiaan, the longest-serving head of state in Suriname’s democratic history, at the age of 89 last week, was delivered by President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, a member of the populist Nationale Democratische Partij (NDP) he opposed throughout his life.
