ARGENTINA: Milei cabinet fuels discord

Argentina’s President Javier Milei ended a cross-party consensus that has endured for more than 40 years on 22 November. With the national security minister, Patricia Bullrich, and the defence minister, Luis Petri, shortly due to take up the seats they won in the lower chamber of congress and the senate respectively in October’s mid-term elections, Milei named their successors. Bullrich’s designated replacement was uncontentious, but Petri’s stirred up significant controversy. For the first time since the return to democracy in 1983, Argentina will have a military officer in charge of the defence ministry rather than a civilian.
