BRAZIL: Lula’s judicial nominee faces uphill battle

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has nominated Jorge Messias, the country’s solicitor general, for a seat on the supreme court (STF). The senate will decide whether to approve the nomination of Lula’s pick, but reports in the media suggest that the political climate does not appear favourable for Messias. Not only are far-right lawmakers allied with former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) expected to oppose the nomination but the centre-right president of the chamber, Davi Alcolumbre, of the conservative party União Brasil (União), is also reportedly opposed to the nomination, given that he would have preferred one of his own allies to be given the STF nomination.
