PERU: Jerí hits the ground running with anti-extortion law

“We know what they do, we know where they are, and now the counterattack is coming,” Peru’s new President José Jerí said on 3 November after promulgating a new law aimed at tackling extortion gangs. This is an urgent political imperative for the new government, given that it was increasing concern over extortion which resulted in the impeachment of Jerí’s predecessor Dina Boluarte (2022-2025) in October [SSR-25-11].
