In brief: Mexico raises minimum wage, moves to reduce work week

*Mexico’s government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that the minimum wage will rise by 13% in 2026, bringing the general minimum daily wage from M$278.80 (US$15.25) to M$315.04. Meanwhile the daily wage in the country’s northern border free zone (ZLFN) will rise 5% from M$419.88 to M$440.87. The government said that this measure was the fruit of an agreement with unions and the business sector and is in line with its objective of raising the minimum wage to cover the cost of 2.5 so-called basic food baskets by 2030 – when Sheinbaum’s term is due to end. It said that with the latest increase, this would reach 1.8 basic food baskets. Also yesterday, Sheinbaum revealed plans to reduce the working week from 48 hours to 40 by 2030 – a reduction first proposed in 2022 under the previous government led by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), Sheinbaum’s mentor, though this has proven controversial with the private sector.
