The right-wing Partido Liberal (PL) of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) had been planning to form an electoral alliance with Ciro Gomes, of the centre-right Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB), in the north-eastern state of Ceará. However, on 30 November Bolsonaro’s wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, publicly discredited the potential alliance, and Bolsonaro’s sons criticised their stepmother for her comments. The spat highlighted tensions within the Bolsonaro family and the ‘Bolsonarismo’ movement, which has not yet chosen a new torchbearer to rally behind in next year’s presidential race.
