MEXICO: Another Chapitos leader pleads guilty

A second son of former Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and organised crime charges in the US. The guilty plea of Joaquín Guzmán López, one of four of El Chapo’s sons who lead the Los Chapitos faction of the Cártel de Sinaloa, was submitted on 1 December. In his plea, Guzmán admitted to kidnapping Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, who co-founded the Cártel de Sinaloa along with El Chapo, and delivering him to US authorities in the hope of receiving leniency for him and his brother. This admission may serve to further exacerbate the bloody conflict in Sinaloa between members of Los Chapitos and those loyal to Zambada, known as La Mayiza or Los Mayos.
