COLOMBIA : Congress rejects latest tax reform bill

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro was dealt another blow by congress on 9 December when a senate commission rejected a tax reform bill that was needed to fund the 2026 budget. Whilst opposition lawmakers called on the government to rein in public spending, with presidential elections due to be held in less than six months it is likely that Petro will look to borrow more rather than implement cuts that could harm the chances of the continuity candidate, Senator Iván Cepeda.
