*Brazil’s Mining and Energy Minister
Alexandre Silveira, São Paulo state governor,
Tarcísio de Freitas, and São Paulo’s mayor,
Ricardo Nunes, have agreed to petition the federal electricity regulator (Aneel) to terminate the local concession of Italian electricity distributor Enel, a major electricity provider in the Greater São Paulo metropolitan region. This comes amid rising outrage over the company’s failure to promptly respond to widespread blackouts last week. These were caused by strong winds felling trees, which destroyed electricity cables. At the peak of the blackouts on 10 December, around 2.2m Enel customers were left without electricity in São Paulo, and the company reportedly took over five days to restore power. This is not the first time that Enel has come under pressure due to power outages. Last year the issue of São Paulo’s climate and energy resilience became a contentious point during the São Paulo mayoral election, with a
blame game ensuing between different candidates. However, following this latest round of blackouts, there appears to be an alignment between the left-of-centre federal government and the right-of-centre state and municipal administrations.
