Chile’s pendulum politics took the most decisive swing since the return to democracy in 1990 in the second round of presidential elections on 14 December. On 11 March next year President Gabriel Boric, the most left-wing head of state since Salvador Allende (1970-1973), will place the presidential sash on José Antonio Kast, the most right-wing candidate since the military dictatorship, who actively campaigned in favour of General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) remaining in power in the 1988 plebiscite. Kast comfortably defeated Jeannette Jara of the broad left-of-centre ruling coalition in the run-off contest.
