BRIEF POINTERS

*** Trinidad preparing for elections. Trinidad & Tobago is preparing for a general election later this year following the issuing of an election writ naming 18 to the 27 September as the period in which citizens must register in order to vote. The exact timing of the election is awaiting an announcement by Prime Minister Patrick Manning. Local political sources believe it will be held towards the end of October.
The ruling People's National Movement (PNM) will be challenged by the main opposition United Congress Party (UNC) allied with some small opposition groupings, and by the Congress of the People (COP), which is a breakaway faction of the UNC headed by former central bank governor Winston Dookeran.
