DOMINICAN REPUBLIC : Upheaval over coup rumours

Allegations by a former guerrilla, Claudio Caamaño, that a group of serving colonels are plotting a coup against President Leonel Fernández, caused upheaval earlier this month. High-ranking officials were quick to dismiss the rumours. The command-officer of the Dominican armed forces' intelligence unit, general Valentí­n Jáquez, vehemently denied the existence of any "destabilising plan" as claimed by Caamaño. Nevertheless, the government ordered an investigation into the allegations and summoned Caamaño to give explanations to a military court.
