*Impeachment motions against Peru’s President
José Jerí have been presented in congress, as he comes under mounting pressure over his
secretive meetings with Chinese businessman
Yang Zhihua. Notably, the three motions to remove Jerí were filed as ‘motions of censure’ rather than presidential impeachment motions, lowering the bar required to remove him from office to 66 votes (a simple majority in the 130-seat congress) rather than 87 (a two-thirds majority). This was justified on the grounds that Jerí assumed the presidency
“temporarily” and by default due to his position as president of congress during
the impeachment of his predecessor
Dina Boluarte (2022-2025) in October. The three motions were each signed by around 20 legislators, mostly from the left-wing parties Bloque Democrático Popular (BDP), Juntos por el Perú-Voces del Pueblo-Bloque Magisterial (JPP-VP-BM), Perú Libre (PL), and Bancada Socialista (BS). Jerí was yesterday questioned on his meetings with Yang by the congressional auditing commission. He denied any wrongdoing, repeating his previous claims that the meetings involved preparations for a ‘friendship day’ between China and Peru.
