In brief: Mexico’s Sheinbaum hails job growth as unemployment edges down

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that unemployment in Mexico “is at its lowest levels”, saying this went for both the formal and informal sectors. She stated there had been an increase of around 300,000 jobs in the formal sector in December, with employment not falling as it had in previous Decembers. This came as Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) reported that the unemployment rate of the economically active population stood at 2.4% in December 2025, the same rate as in December 2024 and down from 2.7% in November. This equates to 1.5m people, unchanging from the previous year. In December the economically active population – meaning people aged 15 and over who are employed or actively seeking work – stood at 61.9m, up by 1.1m people as compared to December 2024 and by 400,000 from November. The informality rate in December was 54.6%, up from 53.7% in December 2024 but down from 54.8% in November.
