In brief: Brazil’s unemployment drops to record lows

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest unemployment figures, showing that the national jobless rate in the fourth quarter of 2025 dropped to a record-low level of 5.1%, equivalent to around 5.5m unemployed people. This is down from the unemployment rate of 5.6% registered for Q3 2025 and from 6.2% registered for Q4 2024. In annual terms, the average unemployment across the four quarters of 2025 stood at 5.6%, down from the annual average of 6.6% registered for 2024. Marking the fourth consecutive year to see a decrease in the annual result, this figure for 2025 is the lowest on record since 2012, when the Ibge began recording the data under the current methodology.
