MEXICO: Violence surges in Sinaloa

Mexico’s federal defence ministry announced the deployment of 2,790 troops to the state of Sinaloa between 29 January and 1 February. The state continues to suffer from the bloody infighting between rival factions of the Cártel de Sinaloa that began in September 2024, sparked by the arrest of two alleged leaders of the factions. Two recent incidents have highlighted the severity of the insecurity crisis that is ongoing in the state despite efforts from the federal government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum to alleviate the situation.
