*Honduras’ new President
Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura has met US President
Donald Trump at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in what is a clear sign of efforts by Asfura, who took office on 27 January, to shore up ties with Washington. Trump provided key backing for Asfura in the 30 November election, threatening to pull US cooperation with Honduras if he lost. Writing on social media following the meeting, Trump said: “
It was my great honor to support Tito's campaign. Once I gave him my strong endorsement, he won his election!” The two leaders alluded to discussions regarding issues such as trade and investment, with Asfura reportedly calling for Trump to reduce tariffs on Honduras as Washington
has done for neighbouring El Salvador and Guatemala. The two also reportedly discussed security and migration, including Trump’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Honduras, a US benefit blocking the deportation of people from countries experiencing
“ongoing armed conflict, environmental disaster, or extraordinary and temporary conditions” that “
prevent its nationals from returning safely”. The move to end TPS for Honduras
has been blocked in the US courts.
