In brief: Brazil’s annual inflation rises in January

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for its official consumer price index (Ipca), showing a monthly inflation rate of 0.33% in January and an annual rate of 4.44%. This monthly figure is the same as the 0.33% monthly inflation registered for December 2025, but the annual inflation rate marks an acceleration from the annual rate of 4.26% registered at the end of last year. In January 2026, seven of the nine categories of products and services measured by the Ibge posted a monthly increase in prices. The greatest monthly price increases were registered in communication (+0.82%), health and personal care (+0.70%), and transport (+0.60%). The two categories that registered monthly deflation in January were housing (-0.11%) and clothing (-0.25%).
