COLOMBIA: Senators targeted by armed groups

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro announced on 11 February that due to severe flooding he has cancelled plans to deliver a message of peace at the 13-15 February Munich Security Conference. His speech would have been delivered at a moment when the government’s flagship ‘total peace’ initiative, which envisioned the negotiated demobilisation of all armed groups, looks certain to remain unrealised when he steps down as president in August. Colombia’s volatile security situation was underlined in the past week by the abduction of one senator, and the attempted assassination of another which left two bodyguards dead.
