*Chile’s President
Gabriel Boric has announced that Chile will begin sending humanitarian aid to Cuba, as the island struggles with a worsening energy and economic crisis. In a social media post announcing the aid, Boric stated that “
the US blockade on Cuba, which has worsened in recent weeks, is criminal and an attack on human rights”. Foreign Minister
Alberto van Klaveren, speaking at the La Moneda presidential palace, reported that donations will be made to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), through the fund against hunger and poverty of Chile’s development agency (Agcid). Van Klaveren told the press that the exact size of the contribution was still under evaluation. He said it was an issue of
“humanitarian interest” and noted that other countries in the region, such as Mexico, have taken similar steps. This comes as over 814m tonnes of aid arrived to Cuba
from Mexico yesterday (12 February). Cuba’s President
Miguel Díaz-Canel thanked Mexico’s President
Claudia Sheinbaum for the goods which he said were signs of the
“solidarity, friendship, and exemplary history of sovereignty and respect for the rights of others that distinguish Mexico”. The aid comes as Cuba’s energy crisis has been aggravated by US President
Donald Trump’s 29 January order
to impose tariffs on countries providing oil to the island.
