Trump’s use of tariffs

Donald Trump has for many years supported protectionist economic policies and opposed globalisation. The novelty of the first year of his second term in office is that he sought to pursue these protectionist and nationalist policies much more aggressively than had been expected, and as means to exert undisguised political leverage against both diplomatic friends and foes alike. In short, import tariffs have been turned into diplomatic weapons.
