ECUADOR: Leading opposition mayor arrested

The mayor of the Ecuador’s coastal city of Guayaquil, Aquiles Álvarez, was arrested on 10 February for alleged money laundering and tax fraud, making him the latest high-profile opposition figure to be targeted by prosecutors in recent weeks. Whilst President Daniel Noboa’s government and the attorney general’s office insist that they are delivering results in the fight against corruption, the opposition claims that it is being persecuted by a judiciary which he is rigging in his favour.
