In brief: Brazil’s job creation down year-on-year

*Brazil’s labour ministry has released the monthly job creation figures for January, showing that a net 112,334 new jobs were created. This marks an improvement on the net loss of 629,761 jobs in December, but it is a lower figure compared to the net 154,396 new jobs created in January 2025. New hires totalled 2.21m in January this year, up from 1.53m new hires in December but down from 2.32m new hires in the same month last year. Meanwhile, dismissals totalled 2.10m in January 2026, down from January and December 2025, with both months registering around 2.16m dismissals.
