*Peruvian prosecutors have launched an investigation into the pipeline company Transportadoras de Gas del Perú S.A. (TGP) in relation to a gas leak in Megantoni district, in the province of La Convención in the Cusco region. The investigation concerns alleged environmental pollution and health and safety failings. The mining and energy ministry (Minem) announced on 1 March that the gas leak, which caused a major fire, had forced TGP to close off the section of pipeline, which transports gas from the Camisea fields. As a result, Minem declared a state of emergency allowing it to ration gas, the supply of which is being prioritised for residential use and essential services. The Argentine oil company Pluspetrol, which operates a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plant in Pisco (Ica region), announced yesterday that it has halted production due to the interruption in the gas supply from Camisea. The gas shortages in Peru come at the same time as global prices are surging due to Qatar’s suspension of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production amid the war in the Middle East.
