Milei hitches fortune to US in key address to congress

“A new world order is being configured,” Argentina’s President Javier Milei said in his state-of-the-nation address to a joint session of congress on 1 March, adding that the way the country inserted itself into this “will determine [its] destiny”. Pivotal to this, Milei said, was a “lasting strategic alliance” with the US, which was what his administration was forging. Milei’s speech came the day after the US and Israel, another country with which Milei has established close ties, carried out coordinated air strikes on Iran, which triggered retaliatory attacks that risk plunging the Middle East into a wider conflict.
