After myriad twists and turns over the course of a quarter of a century, the trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur secured the go-ahead on 27 February. That, however, is far from the end of the matter. While the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, issued a statement on that day announcing the agreement’s application, this is only provisional, pending a ruling from the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in response to a request from the European Parliament in January over its legality, which could hold up the ratification process for two years.
