In brief: Ecuador secures investment in Amazonian oilfields

*Ecuador’s energy and environment minister, Inés Manzano, has signed an expansion of a contract with Singapore-headquartered oil firm Orion Energy, which operates Blocks 52 and 54 in the Amazonian province of Sucumbíos. Under the agreement, Orion’s Ecuadorean subsidiary, Orion Energy Ecuador, commits to investing over US$119m as part of a plan to boost oil exploration and production. This consists of US$49.6m in new obligatory investments in Block 52 over the next six years, including the drilling of four new wells that are expected to boost the concession’s total output by 6.08m barrels, and US$70.24m in new investments in Block 54 over the same time period, including nine new wells that are expected to raise output by 9.74m barrels by 2042.
