A group of international jurists filed a report on 10 March with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) suggesting that there were reasonable grounds to believe that authorities in El Salvador were committing crimes against humanity. The accusation is the latest sign of international concern regarding the human rights situation in El Salvador under President Nayib Bukele, who since late March 2022, has implemented a state of exception to combat gangs which has slashed homicide levels at the expense of basic liberties, due process, and democratic guarantees.
