Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum’s push for electoral reform has become more than an attempt to alter the electoral system. It is now serving as a major test for the ruling coalition that has helped the left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) pass countless reforms and has bolstered the standing of its two smaller members, the Partido del Trabajo (PT) and the Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM). Following the failure of her original reform initiative earlier this month due to the lack of support from these allies, Sheinbaum appeared to have secured the parties’ backing for her Plan B reform ahead of the senate vote this week. However, as the vote drew closer, it became clear that backing from the PT in particular was far from assured.
