In brief: Cuba awaiting Russian crude amid fresh blackout

*Cubans are hoping that an oil tanker from Russia reportedly carrying some 740,000 barrels of crude will reach the island early next week as they endured widespread power cuts on 26 March amid a worsening energy crisis. The Anatoly Kolodkin, a Russian-flagged tanker, is about five days away from Cuba, Jorge Piñón, an energy expert at the University of Texas, said in a videoconference on the energy situation in Cuba organised by the US-based Cuba Study Group (CSG) policy and advocacy organisation, on 26 March, although doubts surround whether it will be able to dock at a Cuban port given the US oil blockade. The state power company Unión Eléctrica (UNE) imposed planned blackouts on 26 March to prevent collapse of the national electric system, leaving some two-thirds of the island without power. Separately, the Mexican navy (Semar) has announced a search and rescue operation to try and locate two missing vessels with nine crew members, which set sail on 20 March from Isla Mujeres near Cancún on the Mexican Caribbean to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba and were due to arrive in Havana on 24-25 March.
