*Mexico’s President
Claudia Sheinbaum has received the president of football’s world governing body Fifa,
Gianni Infantino, at the national palace ahead of Mexico’s co-hosting of the World Cup in June. A Mexican government statement highlighted that Sheinbaum had told Infantino that the World Cup would be
“marvellous” and that the inauguration event on 11 June in which Mexico will play South Africa in Mexico City (CDMX) would be
“historic and exceptional”. During the meeting, Infantino presented Sheinbaum with the official Fifa cards that the referees will use during the tournament, stating that it would be
“a success for Mexico”. Mexico is due to host 13 World Cup matches in CDMX, Nuevo León state capital Monterrey, and Jalisco state capital Guadalajara. Despite security concerns following a surge in violence in Jalisco and across the country due to
the killing of a top drug kingpin in February, both Sheinbaum and Infantino have insisted that all matches will take place as planned.
