In brief: Panama Canal sees surge in transits

*There has been a significant increase of 10% in transits of the Panama Canal in the second half of March as a result of the crisis in the Middle East, the deputy administrator of the waterway, Ilya Espino de Marotta, said on 30 March. “Obviously, the Panama Canal is a safe route, a short route which, with fuel prices as they are, presents better economies of scale,” Espino de Marotta said in an interview with the Panamanian television network Telemetro. She said that in the last two weeks there had been an increase in traffic to between 38 and 41 daily transits of the Canal when around 34 to 36 had been planned, meaning that “we are 10% above what was budgeted in tonnage and revenue”. Panama Canal revenues amounted to US$5.71bn in fiscal year 2025, up 14.4% on the previous year, with a total of 13,404 transits.
