PARAGUAY: Government ramps up militarised response to organised crime

President Santiago Peña has expanded military deployment for internal security across the entire eastern region of the country. In late February he signed a decree authorising military involvement in policing, including the use of force with the aim of countering criminal groups active in the region. This marks a major escalation in the country’s long-running strategy of using the armed forces to combat organised crime.
