*Paraguay’s government led by President
Santiago Peña has announced the resignation of
Carlos Fernández Valdovinos as economy and finance minister.
Juan José Galeano Paredes will take over the role on an interim basis until a replacement is chosen. Galeano is currently a presidential adviser on social and economic issues, a role he will maintain while carrying out his new duties. The change comes as Fernández, who had been in the role since August 2023, has been under pressure over his support for a controversial
reform to the public sector pension system, which was ultimately passed by congress after undergoing significant changes. Peña’s cabinet chief,
Javier Giménez, stated that the change marked the start of a new stage aimed at
“consolidating economic growth and strengthening government efficiency”. This new stage will also focus on guaranteeing the efficient use of public resources and assuring that economic growth translates into better quality of life for all Paraguayans, especially the most vulnerable, according to a government statement. The government reaffirmed its commitment to macroeconomic stability, the generation of employment, and the implementation of public policies that allow for poverty reduction and boosting opportunities across the country.
