BRAZIL: Relief for Lula as corruption inquiry ends

Since August 2025, Brazil’s congress has been carrying out a joint committee inquiry (CPMI) to investigate the fraudulent deductions being siphoned off from pensions in recent years, a scandal which rocked the national social security agency (INSS) last year and contributed to a temporary decline in the approval ratings of the government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The inquiry concluded on 28 March this year, but with its committee members unable to approve a final report and failing to agree on who was to blame for the alleged corruption.
