In brief: Paraguay’s government appoints new economy minister

*Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña has announced that Oscar Lovera will serve as the government’s minister for economy and finance, replacing Carlos Fernández Valdovinos, who resigned on 31 March. The Peña administration had framed the resignation of Fernández Valdovinos last week as part of a new stage of “consolidating economic growth and strengthening government efficiency”. According to a government press release, Lovera is currently the deputy minister for financial administration and has over 30 years of experience in the public sector and government roles, such as managing in the finance ministry’s budget team and serving as a board member of Paraguay’s state-owned development bank (BNF). The government statement published yesterday also cited President Peña as saying that Lovera will have the mission of “improving the efficiency of public spending and supporting growth, hand-in-hand with the private sector”.
