In brief: Brazil’s inflation accelerates

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for its official consumer price index (Ipca), showing that monthly inflation in March stood at 0.88% while the annual rate was 4.14%. This marks an acceleration from 0.70% monthly inflation in February when the annual rate was 3.81%. All nine categories of products and services measured by the Ibge registered a monthly rise in prices in March 2026. The categories with the greatest monthly inflation rates were transport (+1.64%), food and drinks (+1.56%), and personal spending (+0.65%). Inflation in the transport category in monthly terms was mainly driven by price surges in gasoline (+4.56%) and diesel (+13.90%). In a press release, the Ibge has highlighted the effect of the “international situation” on global fuel prices - a reference to the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
